Torque specs for lug nuts

If you use the dry torque number on lubricated bolts you will snap them off. I derate 40% when oil, grease, or Never Seize is used and I've never snapped off a stud or had a wheel come off. 75 ft-lbs derated 40% is 45 ft-lbs. (Derated Torque)=(Dry Torque) - (Dry Torque * .4)

Sep 21, 2012 · Hi, new to the forums. I am enrolled in auto school and working on my 68 4 door hard top chevy impala. The instructor will not let us put back on our wheels unless we know the specific lug nut torque. Its got a 5 bolt pattern with 7/16 nuts. Looked online couldn't find anything.
I even had 1 lug nut that was only finger tight. I don't know if the new car inspection the dealers do have anything to do with removing the wheels or not but this is kinda scary this is true, always best to torque to spec though, especially in performance vehicles, it's easy to over torque your wheels as well!
